More Miegakure Concept Art!

Here’s more concept art for one of the realms in Miegakure. I also showed concept art and explained some of the ideas behind the different realms in this post.

The people who inhabit this realm live longer and are in general happier than humans, but it does not mean their society is perfect — it also has a darker side.

This piece was just selected for inclusion into the twenty-fifth volume of Spectrum, which selects “the finest in the fantasy, horror, science fiction and the surreal genres from around the world.”

Three Arch Building Concept Art

[It’s actually not the first time a piece done for one of my games got selected (previous selections included an illustration for 4D Toys, and previous concept art for Miegakure).]

Here’s another piece I really like:

Aqueduct City Concept Art

We have so many more but I don’t want to spoil the game too much!

  5. Sonny says:

Oh my god, I can’t wait for any sort of release; even if it’s just a little sneak peak.

  6. Stephen says:

Please keep up the good efforts to make this game available to the general public! I am desperate to play it. >:)))

  7. Rafaela says:

I’ve been doing what I can to stay healthy and alive long enough to play this game, it’s been so long since it’s being developed I’m not sure if i’m still going to be alive to buy it when it comes out ๐Ÿ™

  8. Sam says:

I feel that feeling when you order a package in the mail, and you know it’s going to take at least a day before it even ships, and then at least 2 weeks snaking across the country before it gets here, and yet I jump to the shipping tracking and begin refreshing every two minutes… Is it insane? yes. Do I do it? yes…

  9. Max says:

I’ve been checking in on this game with interest every so often pretty much since that XKCD comic eight years ago. I’ve been very careful to not get too excited over it – eight years of unchecked hype for *anything* would be a recipe for crushing disappointment – but I’m still very much looking forward to getting to play your game! It seems almost surreal that the game’s actually nearing release, with only a year or two left to go.

I’m surprised that ordinary 3D modeling has ended up being one of the big remaining bottlenecks. Was this expected?

  10. Edhuan says:

One of the many waiting for this game. Hope all goes well!

  11. Aesneak says:

Remember, you probably play this daily, but us others NEVER played it. Dying for a demo!

  12. Marco says:

This game development looks more and more like the Kubrick’s Apollo program. At least we get teasers to be excited with.

  13. Nawa says:

    I WANNA PLAYYYYYYYYYYY

Srsly waiting Miegakure is like seeing a bag of sweets and being told “Be patient my son”

Duuuuude I hardly want to buy it
    Can’t wait ^^

  14. Rain says:

    Please, is there a demo?

    • Weazel says:

Hi, there is no demo yet, but you can find a nice short game Mark made called 4DToys, which uses the 4D physics engine to simulate impossible toys ๐Ÿ™‚ (also available in VR)

  15. Gabriel says:

When I saw this game for the first time I was like ‘Omg! I must play it!’ but when I searched it I sadly realised that this is a to-be-released game. I hope that you will finish it soon!

  16. Vinny says:

Jesus, I canโ€™t wait. It seems only days ago the game was first announced and Iโ€™ve been hyping ever since, not just because of the game itself, but also because of a brand new engine capable of operating in the 4th dimension. Itโ€™ll be a whole new genre of puzzle and adventure games, the possibilities are endless. I wish you the best my dude, and hope all your hard work really pays off.

    • Gui says:

i don’t think there will be a lot of 4D adventure games. Theres just no need to do them in such a problematic engine. However, puzzle games…

  17. Sam Loy says:

    Happy start of Autumn Marc!

    Keep up the good work!

  18. Olley says:

i want it so much, i feel like a child who just got presented a toy he always wished :3

  20. Ian says:

Holy cow, this is wayyy prettier than I was expecting at the beginning
    Stoked for years!

  21. Joel says:

Do we get a Christmas/New Year update?

  22. Leo says:

    Merry Xmas!
    And is there any progress?

  23. Sam Loy says:

So I had an idea, if there is to be some sort of level editor, or please just let there be some sort of 4D artist tool, where you can make a world, and explore it, doesn’t necessarily have to be a puzzle designer… anyway if there were to be such a tool, that there’s a “fullness meter” I realized as I framed through the trailer on Youtube that I didn’t have a concrete sense in my mind to just how full the world I was viewing was, there are a lot more trees than I was aware of in the 120-cell rock area. I feel like you’d want to have a grip on how much you need to populate a world so that no “slice” of it would feel too empty or two crowded.

An advanced idea of this would be to use an AI programmed with curiosity as the score function would be allowed to roam and rotate around until it’s “bored.” The quicker it gets bored the lower the region would score, and It could even highlight regions of boredom… I guess you could also just give the AI 4D vision, but then what’s interesting to the 4D bot might not be interesting from a 3D slice perspective.

  24. lon lom says:

I really hope you put some sort of editor, level design or modding tool for community level designs, community driven games are so much better and give many more hours of gameplay.

I also wanted to ask that if you ever leave this game, if you ever give up please leave the incomplete files for us to download, thanks.

  25. Sam says:

Just had an idea (might be terrible, not sure), have a mode where as you walk you see a perpendicular plane overlaid on top in a very light “x-ray” like appearance, to show you what the world will look like when you rotate.

I would think that seeing the “x-ray” layer to rotate simultaneously with the regular layer might increase the look of “rotation”

  26. tim says:

I ache for this game. I’m not going to watch monsters inc. I want game!!! waaaaaaaaah

  27. Avi says:

What will it take for you to release this game? It has been “nearly” complete for many years now. I have been loyally checking the blog every few months for I don’t even know how long. Every time filled with a tiny bit of excitement that maybe this time it will actually be here.

Have you considered appealing to others to help you finish it? Maybe doing a crowd funding campaign or open sourcing it. Or just release it as is. People will forgive the imperfections. What is the point of making it “perfect” if it never sees the light of day!

It’s just too sad to think we might never get to play it : (

    • Samuel Loy says:

On the plus side, every time Marc has stated “nearly” complete or in the “home stretch,” that statement has been accompanied by new image, and new information about what’s being worked on. So I wouldn’t describe this as being in “development hell,” I am confident that there is an end point.

He has stated in the past that he won’t open source it. I can’t remember if he’s hired help or not.

    • vanderlei says:

Same felling here but still hopeful we will get to play it.
an update would be really nice ๐Ÿ™‚

  28. G says:

well? are you ever going to update? did you die?

  29. G says:

we are about to have gone a whole year without updates, this is depressing.

  30. Sam says:

    11 months 21 days 17 hours 35 minutes without a 4 dimensional incident…

  31. Gizmo says:

It’s been over a year now since the last update. I’m sure you have been hard at work but it would be nice to have an update to hold us over untill the game is finished.

  32. Hugo Cesar says:

I may be some days late, yet I wish a happy anniversary for this post.

  33. G says:

how about making a 4d minecraft after miegakure using the same engine. would such a thing be possible? and would it be fun?

  34. F says:

man, it’s been over a year now, can you give us some sign that you are still working on this?

  35. Nobody says:

    Maaa-aarc!
    Where aaare youuu???
    0__0

  36. not Marc Ten Boch says:

Do you know the specs for the game? i imagine it won’t be very graphically demanding based on what we’ve seen, but how difficult to simulate are the 4d physics?

  37. C says:

    I still believe

  38. Excellent blog! Do you have any tips for aspiring writers?

I’m hoping to start my own blog soon but I’m a little lost on everything.
Would you suggest starting with a free platform like WordPress or go for
a paid option? There are so many options out there that
I’m totally confused .. Any ideas? Thank you!

  39. Michael C says:

Maybe it has already been released in the 4th dimension and we haven’t been able to slide across out of 3D to get it??!

  40. Chris says:

I’ve been following this blog pretty much since it started…

Is there a status worth reporting?

  41. Samuel Loy says:

    Help! I’ve gotten distracted by Super Mario Maker 2! Send 4D video game… before… it’s… too… late!

  42. CaptainFlint says:

    Dear Marc,

It’s been nearly 1.5 years since this last blogpost, and almost 8 months since your latest comment here. I don’t want to push anything, knowing it’s not an easy task to develop a good game, but such long silence is really worrying.

I hope everything is OK with you and your project. Could you please post just a tiny status update once in a while? So that we knew, that what we are all waiting for will come some day. Or that it won’t, if for any reason you found yourself unable to continue this work (which I really hope is not the case, but it’s life, bad things do happen sometimes).

  43. Max says:

Hi, I’m super excited for this game to come out (I didn’t want to put this on any of the latest posts since one of them had to do with 4d toys and the other one was a description of some of the methods you are using and why the the more popular one is less efficient), and I was wondering, when do you think this game will be released? Also, is it going to be ps4 exclusive? I’ve heard rumors, and as a consumer I would definitely spend the 300 extra dollars on this game but I would also be angry to do so
